Flu Drug Isn't Working

Why It Matters:
With the annual flu season upon us, the CDC announced today that the
flu drug Tamiflu is apparently not working against one strain of this
year's flu virus. While other treatment options exist, not all can be
used by young children.

President Bush Issues Health Rule

Why It Matters:
A new federal rule initiated by the Bush administration reinforces
protections for doctors and other health care workers who refuse to
provide abortions or other procedures because of religious or moral
objections. Several lawmakers are already working on a bill to undo
the rule change.

New Guidelines on IBS Announced

Why It Matters:
From the American College of Gastroenterology comes a list of new
guidelines for diagnosing and treating IBS. Among the recommendations:
IBS patients with diarrhea and constipation should be screened for
celiac disease, antidepressants can be a successful treatment for some
patients; and a specific probiotic may help some patients.
